A Valheim server does more than count connected players. It keeps the world simulation available, processes exploration and building activity, and saves the group’s progress. A quiet meadow base and a busy group sailing into unexplored territory can need different resources even when their player counts are identical.
On MaximusHost, the sensible starting recommendation for Valheim is 4–8 GB RAM and 2–4 vCPU. Treat that as a planning range, not a promise that every world will perform identically. Choose resources in the live create form, test a representative session, and revisit your allocation as the world develops.
A practical starting configuration
For a small group beginning a mostly vanilla world, start near the lower half of the recommended range and leave room for the initial server process and ordinary exploration. Move toward the upper end if several players frequently travel in different directions, the world contains extensive structures, or you expect longer, busier sessions.
MaximusHost limits are defined as 2–16 GB RAM and 1–6 vCPU as shared Valheim operational bounds, while the recommended range is 4–8 GB RAM and 2–4 vCPU. These resource settings can be monitored and modified via the Resources tab within the management page. Do not size a live server solely from a table in an article.
If you already have a saved world, use its normal gameplay patterns as your benchmark. Visit a large settlement, explore new areas, sail with several connected players, and watch the server for a while before deciding an allocation is adequate.
What changes Valheim’s memory requirements?
RAM use depends partly on how much world data and state the dedicated server is handling. New exploration, structures, terrain changes, creatures, and active world events can change the workload.
A server that runs comfortably during a quiet login may show higher memory use when players spread out. It can also behave differently immediately after startup, during world saves, or after a game update. Leave headroom rather than choosing an allocation that only fits the lowest observed usage.
World-save size is not the same as live RAM usage. A long-lived save may occupy more disk because of discovered terrain and structures, but disk consumption alone does not specify a reliable memory requirement. Inspect actual resource samples and console behavior before increasing RAM.
Why CPU matters as much as RAM
CPU time drives simulation work. Terrain generation, physics, building activity, creatures, and multiplayer synchronization may cause short periods of heavier processing. More RAM does not solve a CPU-bound frame or simulation stall.
On MaximusHost, RAM and vCPU are adjustable resources. If the process has plenty of free memory but becomes unresponsive during exploration, inspect CPU and logs rather than immediately doubling memory. Conversely, memory pressure or restarts may justify more RAM even when CPU looks ordinary.
The right choice depends on real observed behavior. A few players building at one location can be different from the same number exploring far apart in boats.
Does Valheim support ten players?
Valheim is generally designed around cooperative groups of up to ten players in a world. That game-design limit is not a guarantee that a specific resource allocation handles ten active players exploring or building without noticeable lag.
Plan for how many people will actually play at once, not how many were invited. When more people join, review the server’s Resources, Console, and Activity information during a busy period. Player counts derived from logs are useful context but are not a perfect live-presence measurement.
If your group uses mods through manual installation, additional code and content may change requirements.
Understand the credit estimate before creation
MaximusHost uses credit-based billing rather than requiring you to buy a fixed monthly package for a particular Valheim tier. The creation form calculates a running estimate from your chosen resources and expected usage. There is also a one-time 50-credit creation charge.
A server that stays online around the clock consumes running resources for longer than one stopped between sessions. Stopped-server storage can still incur charges. Review the live estimate and the billing and credits guide.
Valheim on MaximusHost uses managed shared networking for its standard game and query ports; it does not require purchasing a separate dedicated IP. The manager supplies your connection details after provisioning.
How to test whether your server is sized correctly
Create the server with the recommended resources, then run a representative session. Invite the players who will use it, explore a new biome, travel back to a developed settlement, and allow at least one ordinary world save to complete.
Monitor CPU and RAM usage while this happens. Check Console for game errors and startup warnings, and distinguish a client-side networking problem from server resource pressure. Watch whether freezes correlate with saves or fresh terrain generation.
Change one allocation at a time and repeat the same type of session. If the problem disappears only after substantially more CPU, you have better evidence than a generic player-to-RAM ratio. If it persists regardless of resources, check the game version, networking, mods, and world data.
When should you upgrade or reduce resources?
Consider adding capacity when normal sessions consistently approach the memory allocation, show repeated process restarts, or remain slow under sustained CPU pressure. If a new world works well but an older world struggles, compare the worlds’ activities before assuming the machine is faulty.
Consider reducing resources after several typical sessions show stable usage well below the allocation. Leave enough room for the occasional heavier event and for growth. A short quiet sample is not evidence that peak capacity is unnecessary.
Use Resources to evaluate what the server is doing, not only a theoretical maximum player count. Start, measure, adjust, and measure again.
