Manage Project Zomboid Steam Workshop Mods
Add, update, disable, and remove supported Project Zomboid Workshop items in MaximusHost while protecting an existing world.
Workshop items can add maps, objects, features, and other changes to a Project Zomboid server. Everyone joining a modded server needs compatible game and mod versions. Review an item's description and requirements before adding it to an established world.
Add a Workshop item
- Create a backup before changing mods on a world your group wants to keep.
- Open My Servers, select your Project Zomboid server, then choose Mods.
- On Steam Workshop, open the item you want and note its numeric Workshop item ID. Check its listed requirements and confirm it supports a dedicated Linux server.
- Enter the ID under Workshop item ID. If the item needs one or more internal Mod IDs, add them under Internal Mod IDs (optional, separated by semicolons). Click Add Workshop item.
- Start the server once so the pending Workshop item can download. Then stop the server and return to Mods to review the detected item and its status.
- Use Enable or Enable all for a downloaded item when needed. The Update on next start action requests an update on a later start.
The Mods page may display detected dependencies and warnings. Check the Workshop item's own requirements as well; do not assume every dependency or compatibility issue will be identified automatically. Add each required Workshop item using its own ID before you start the server.
Experimental support and compatibility
Project Zomboid Workshop management is experimental. It downloads items when the server starts and may show item details or detected dependencies, but the Mods page does not check whether each item supports the server's current game build.
Make sure the item and its dependencies support the server's game version and a dedicated Linux server. Coordinate the installed Workshop items with every player's client. Add one item at a time, start the server, and check the Mods status and the Console tab before adding more. The Console tab opens the Console & Logs panel.
Remove a problematic mod safely
- Stop the server.
- If the world matters to your group, create a backup before removing or disabling anything.
- In Mods, choose Disable for the affected item, or choose Remove to remove its Workshop subscription. When MaximusHost can identify the package files, it removes those files too; if it cannot, the downloaded files may remain.
- Start the server and check the Console tab before inviting players back.
Some mods add items or systems that a saved world depends on. Removing one can change or damage that world. If the server does not start or the world behaves differently, stop it and restore a backup from before the change. A restore replaces current server data, including progress made after that backup. If downloaded files remain after Remove, contact support rather than deleting unfamiliar server files.
