Create a Server
This guide explains how to create a new Rust Dedicated Server from the My Servers page.
Rust server hosting is currently available for Premium Members and Founders while additional Rust-specific features continue to be added.
My Servers Page
The My Servers page is your main dashboard for managing all servers on your account.
Typical information shown includes:
- Total Servers
- Active Servers
- Available Credits
- Credit purchase options
- Existing server list
- Server creation options
Available Credits
Your current credit balance appears near the top-right area.
Credits are used to run servers based on resource usage and platform pricing.
If needed, use:
Buy Credits
to add more balance.
Navigate to Create New Server
From the My Servers page:
- Click the Create New Server tab
- Select the game you want to host
- Choose Rust
This opens the Rust creation page.
Create a Rust Server
The Rust creation page lets you choose resources, server name, and server location.
At the current stage, Rust servers do not receive a dedicated IP address by default. Instead, MaximusHost assigns unique shared-IP ports for the Rust game port, query port, RCON port, and Rust+ app port.
Dedicated IP support may be added for Rust servers in the future.
Customize Resources
Use the sliders to choose your hardware allocation.
Memory (GB)
Controls available RAM.
Rust benefits from enough RAM for:
- More players
- Larger maps
- Longer-running worlds
- Better stability during world generation
A first-time Rust server should generally use at least 8 GB RAM.
CPU (vCPU)
Controls processor power.
Higher CPU helps with:
- World generation
- More active players
- Busy servers
- Server events and entity activity
A first-time Rust server should generally use at least 4 vCPU.
Credit Cost
The live form calculates the authoritative running estimate from the RAM and vCPU values you select.
Credits are deducted while the server is running.
Game servers have a one-time creation fee of 50 credits.
Server Name
Choose the display name for your server inside MaximusHost.
This name helps you identify the server in your account dashboard.
You can later configure the public Rust server name from the server management page.
Server Location
Choose the hosting region.
Example:
US-East
Select the region closest to most players for lower latency.
Recommended First-Time Setup
Small Private Server
- Moderate Ram (8.0 GB)
- Moderate CPU (4.0 vCPU)
This is a good starting point for a private Rust server with friends.
You can adjust resources later if the server needs more performance.
Create Server
After reviewing settings, click:
Create Server
You will be returned to My Servers page with your new server in maintenance mode. Once provisioning is complete, your new server will exit maintenance mode and will be fully available to you.
Server setup may take several minutes before the server is ready. Rust may need to install or update server files and generate the initial world.
After Creation
Once complete, your server should appear in My Servers.
From there you can open the management page to:
- Start and stop the server
- View live console logs
- Send console commands
- View player activity
- Change basic server settings
- Create and restore backups
- Use File Manager
- Manage Rust world seed and world size
Connecting to Your Rust Server
Rust servers currently connect using a server address and port.
Your server management page will show the connection address.
The format is:
domain-or-ip:port
Example:
example.maximushost.com:51003
To connect from inside Rust:
1. Open Rust
2. Press F1 to open the console
3. Enter:
client.connect domain-or-ip:port
Then press Enter.
Adding the Server to Steam Favorites
You can also add the server to Steam Favorites.
Rust uses a separate query port for server browser and favorite behavior.
From Steam:
- Open Steam
- Click View
- Click Game Servers
- Open the Favorites tab
- Click +
- Enter the server address using the query port
- Save it
The format is:
domain-or-ip:query-port
After adding it, the server should appear in your Steam Favorites list when it is online.
Finding the Server In-Game
Rust server browser visibility can take a few minutes after startup.
To search in-game:
- Start Rust
- Open the server browser
- Search for the server name
- Enable filters such as Show Empty if needed
- Check the correct category, usually Community or Modded
If the server does not appear immediately, use the direct connect command or Steam Favorites method above.
World Management
Rust worlds are based on several important values:
- Server identity
- World size
- Seed
- Rust protocol/version
Changing the seed or world size creates a different save path. This can make Rust generate a new world.
For that reason, Rust world settings should be changed only from the dedicated Worlds tab.
Do not change seed or world size unless you intentionally want to switch or generate a different map.
Troubleshooting
Create button not working
Check:
- Enough credits available
- Required fields completed
- Resource values valid
- Your account has Premium or Founder access
Server costs too high
Reduce RAM or CPU sliders.
Rust is more resource-intensive than smaller games, so lowering resources too far may affect performance.
Server takes a while to start
Rust may need time to:
- Install or update server files
- Generate the procedural map
- Build navmesh data
- Load entities and saves
Initial startup can take several minutes.
Players cannot find the server in the Rust browser
Try:
- Searching by the server name
- Enabling Show Empty
- Checking both Community and Modded
- Waiting a few minutes after startup
- Connecting directly with client.connect
- Adding the server to Steam Favorites using the query port
Players cannot connect
Check:
- Server is running
- Correct game port is being used
- Address includes the port
- Server is not still starting up
- No password or whitelist setting is blocking players
Tips
- Choose the closest region to your players.
- Start with 8 GB RAM and 4 vCPU, then adjust later.
- Use backups before major changes.
- Use the Worlds tab for seed or world size changes.
- Use direct connect if the Rust browser has not listed the server yet.
